Membership/Library Services

As created and defined by the Constitution of the Dayton Law Library Association, there are three categories of users as defined below:

- Individual Members

- Statutory Users

- Gratuitous Users

Individual Members - Any attorney at law admitted to practice before the highest court of any state is eligible to become an individual member of the Dayton Law Library Association upon application and payment of membership dues. For members admitted to the Bar five years or less, the annual dues are $50.00. Beginning with the sixth year of practice, the dues increase to $75.00.

Statutory Users - Statutory users are those persons entitled by law to use the library free of charge by virtue of Ohio Revised Code Sections 3375.48 and 3375.55. Statutory users may sign out library materials on the same basis as Individual Members.

Gratuitous Users - Use of the Law Library is also extended without charge to Judges of the Federal Courts, United States Attorneys and their assistants. Gratuitous use may also be extended to non-resident, non-member attorneys. Registered law students, paralegals and legal assistants may be granted gratuitous use upon the sponsorship of an Individual Member or Statutory User.

Reference Services - The Library staff will assist users in the location of information and materials needed to support legal research and offer instruction in the use of these tools. Reference service does not include performing research for the user or the offering of legal advice or opinions. Patrons may direct inquiries to the Library's Assistant Law Librarian for Research & User Services Donald Walker at 937-225-4496. E-mail inquiries may be sent to dwalker@daylawlib.org

Disclaimer: The members of the staff may offer library services to assist professionals in their research efforts, but they are not authorized to give legal advice or practice law.

The Staff may assist in research as directed by the user, but the user will remain the person solely responsible for the quality and quantity of the research regardless of the amount of assistance provided. Likewise, the user is responsible for any advice, counsel and conduct with respect to his or her client(s).

Media Center - The Library's media center located behind the Reader Services area houses the seven patron workstations connected to the Library's network and provides free access to all of the Library's CD products and software titles as well as the Internet. A high speed printer is available in the media center. Copies are twenty cents ($.20) per page. The Law Library maintains flat rate subscriptions to both LEXIS NEXIS and WESTLAW. Registered users may access selected databases within either service at no cost.

Circulation Policies - Circulating materials may be charged out at the circulation desk. This privilege is extended to Individual, Statutory and certain Gratuitous users only. Sponsored law students and paralegals may charge out material in the name of their sponsor. Library materials may be charged out for no longer than two weeks. The Library reserves the right to recall circulating items at any time. Overdue notices will be sent for unreturned items following the two week loan period and replacement costs will be charged for lost materials. Some materials are restricted to use in the Library. These works are marked NON-CIRC.

Photocopy Services - A photocopy machine is available near the circulation area. The charge for copies produced on the Library's photocopying equipment is twenty cents ($.20) per copy. This charge also applies to copies made from the network printer located in the media center as well as copies made from microforms.

Facsimile Services - The Law Library maintains a facsimile machine for in-house and patron use. The charge for this service is twenty cents ($.20) per page for receiving a fax transmission and two dollars ($2.00) per document, with a twenty-five page maximum, for sending a transmission. An additional cost will be charged for lengthy documents.
